Total Distance Covered: 2860 miles
Awoke to find an Italian ‘Mongol Charities Rally’ team checking out Keith and after exchanging pleasantries we got on the road. Very soon we had our first brush with the law when we were pulled over for doing 73kph in a 50kph zone and after some negotiations a fine of approx 12 was agreed. Whilst the speed gun reading was almost certainly true it seemed convenient that we were the only vehicle to be pulled from the queue of traffic! A couple more encounters with the boys in blue provided the Ukrainian police with no further additions to their retirement fund due to our, by now impeccable, impression of bewildered tourists with no understanding of Russian. A speedy pit stop at a supermarket in Karkhiv filled in any gaps left by the previous shop, including 4 overly large, dubious looking sausages. Whilst searching for a suitable campsite/service station we were flagged down by Mongol Rally team ‘Baatar the Devil You Know’ who we, in typical British fashion, shared tea and flapjacks with on the roadside. However due to their time constraints we soon parted company after exchanging our extra Russian maps for some, much needed, insect repellent.
