Day 43

Anticipating the same atrocious roads we set off early giving us a generous time frame in which to make Tsetserleg. After only a few kilometres however we encountered tarmac roads, all be it rather patchy and sporadic. Incredible scenery including an impressive gorge and our final mountain pass of the trip we arrived in Tsetserleg for a late lunch at the recommended ‘Fairfields guest house’. After a few hours, two lasagne’s, a steak sandwich, mocha’s, Lapsang souchong and excessive internet use we decided to take an ‘easy detour from the main road’ (as quoted by the authors of the lonely planet guide book) to find the Tsenkher hot springs. After a few different direction suggestions, wrong turns, mud, ruts and two sizeably river crossings we finally made it to the Ger camp in the hills. On our travels we bumped into a English couple cycling home from New Zealand. That evening we camped just outside the Ger camp and again ate far too much and felt rather uncomfortable for the rest of the evening, watching ‘Boondock saints’ in the front seats of the van.
